So how do you think this all started?
Primitive man discovered things, processes, and phenomenon and also found
its various uses by thinking. He understood that life became easier by
using such discoveries.
Thinking is our basic instinct. We think. What can it be? What can it be
used for? We imagine, we try, and we test. This fact is generic for all kinds
of human beings. We do things that make our time easier than it is. Be that a
tribal person or a modern day civilized person.
The argument that tribal people do not use design is doubtful. They too
will do things that will make their living easier. No human will purposely do
things that will make his living tiresome, difficult.
Civilized persons are known to be far ahead in this regard. They want time
to do other things, often they lose the balance between what is essential to be
done the hard way and opt for luxury of laziness. The tribal on the other hand
use the basic, the most primitive of techniques for survival. No one can deny
that their way of life is harmonious with nature and that the knowledge of the
ancestors is the way of living. So, should the present generation simply stop
inventing newer means, stop inventing newer methods to do a certain type of
job?
Yes, maintaining harmony with nature is essential for a sustained living on
this planet. But we have the gift of thinking. It will be unjust to our ability
to think only about how to survive till tomorrow by only filling stomach and
protecting ourselves from external forces. We can imagine, we can analyze, and
it is our natural instinct.
Suppose for some time that we have had no mathematicians, no scientists, no
architects, what would have been the state of earth? The resources would have
been intact, untouched. Trees would be dominant. Atmosphere would have been
clean. But then we would not have been human at all. What difference would
there be between humans and apes? Size may be, lesser hair?
The fact of what we are today is a result of our programming by nature. It
was upto us to think. Let me not get into the debates about conservation of
nature and resources. The topic of discussion is 'livelihood'.
To understand what livelihood exactly one means lets first talk about how a
living being spends 24hours of a day. What do animals do in 24 hours? Hunt,
eat, sleep, play, protect their territory, and mate in the mating season.
Imagine if we do the same thing. If we eat the same thing we get bored. If we
have to hunt for food every day, then that is a task. May be that would be our
major task that kept us busy and involved. All our capabilities would have been
used for hunting. Exactly this was the case of Stone Age man, and I'm scared to
say this, but may be this might be the day’s work of today’s deep tribal. Got
to look that up. When we get free time from hunting and eating, then that is
the time for recreation, playing, doing activities that will keep us busy in
the free time. I'm not sure if humans are the animals with the least sleeping
hours, but I’m sure too much of sleeping nauseates.
We can do so much more with our capabilities. Why waste our thinking
prowess and simply worry about hunting for food each day? This is our land as
equally as it is of trees and other animals. We have a gift of thinking, which
we must make us of. A decision to be
made is how to strike a balance between conserving nature and utilizing nature.
